English Class Turned Sustainable

Welcome to Ms. Sabin's English class with a twist!
You are probably wondering when English class turned into Science class, but what we all need to remember is that we use reading and writing skills in all of our subject areas! Similarly, sustainability, and being environmentally aware, also bring elements of all our subject areas into the mix. Before I continue, we must define sustainability.

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability is not just about being environmentally aware! Within the topic of sustainability, we also find concerns for social equity and economic development. The term 'sustainability' is relatively new, but the roots are not. Looking back throughout history, we see struggles with equity in race, gender and socioeconomic status. We also see economic advances in mass production of goods and trade. This is where we come back to its connectivity to our other subject areas; Science, Social Studies, Math and even Physical Education.

Being sustainable and environmentally conscious is a lifestyle and has become important to me as I think about the future that you, my students, and future generations will be living in. My goal for this course is to integrate the other subject areas into our classroom while providing each student with knowledge on how to keep our environment and society as healthy as it can be.
